Maryam is devoted to worship and cared for under Zakariyya. In seclusion she is visited by a messenger who announces a pure son. She asks how this can be, and is told that it is easy for Allah.

The pains of childbirth bring her to a palm tree, where she receives comfort, water, and food. Returning with the child, she faces accusation and points to him. Isa speaks by Allah’s permission, identifying himself as a servant of Allah and a prophet.

Quran-grounded account

01

A child devoted before birth

Maryam’s story begins with the prayer of her mother, who dedicates the child in her womb to Allah’s service. When a daughter is born, she names her Maryam and seeks protection for her and her descendants. Maryam is accepted graciously and raised under the care of Zakariyya. Whenever he enters her place of worship, he finds provision with her. Her answer is simple: it is from Allah, who provides without measure.

02

The announcement in seclusion

Maryam withdraws from her family to an eastern place and places a screen between herself and others. Allah sends His Spirit, who appears to her as a well-formed man. She immediately seeks refuge in the Most Merciful. He tells her that he is a messenger bearing news of a pure son. Maryam asks how she can have a child when no man has touched her and she has not been unchaste. She is told that the matter is easy for Allah and that the child will be a sign and mercy.

03

Labor beneath the palm

Maryam conceives and withdraws to a distant place. The pains of labor drive her to the trunk of a palm tree, where her anguish becomes so intense that she wishes she had been forgotten. She is called from below and comforted: a stream has been placed at her feet, and shaking the palm will bring down fresh dates. She is told to eat, drink, and be comforted, and to observe a fast from speech when she returns to her people.

04

The infant speaks

Maryam returns carrying the child and faces a shocked accusation. Following her instruction not to speak, she points to the infant. Isa speaks, identifying himself as a servant of Allah who has been given revelation and made a prophet. He says that he has been made blessed, commanded to pray and give charity, and made dutiful to his mother. The Quran distinguishes this miraculous birth from any claim of divinity: Isa is a servant and messenger, and Allah is his Lord and theirs.

Editorial reflection

A question the story leaves open

The Quran gives Maryam her own spiritual stature and names both her vulnerability and her strength. Isa’s first words locate his life within servanthood to Allah.
