Story plateShip, fish, open shore, and the plant Allah causes to grow.

Yunus departs and boards a laden ship. He casts lots and loses, and a fish swallows him. In darkness he glorifies Allah, acknowledges his wrong, and calls out.

Allah answers him, casts him onto the open shore in weakness, and causes a plant to grow over him. Yunus is sent to a population of one hundred thousand or more, and they believe for a time.

Quran-grounded account

Follow the cited narrative

01

Departure and the laden ship

Yunus is one of the messengers. The Quran recalls that he left in anger and boarded a fully laden ship. He cast lots and was among those who lost, and a fish swallowed him.

02

A prayer within darkness

Within layered darkness, Yunus calls out. He declares that there is no deity but Allah, glorifies Him, and acknowledges that he has been among the wrongdoers. The prayer does not bargain or shift blame. It combines recognition of Allah’s perfection with honest recognition of his own error. The Quran presents this turning as the decisive movement in the story.

03

Cast onto the shore

Allah answers and rescues him from distress. Had Yunus not been among those who glorify Allah, he would have remained within the fish until the Day of Resurrection. Instead he is cast onto an open shore while sick and weakened. Allah causes a squash plant to grow over him.

04

A mission renewed

Yunus is sent to a population of one hundred thousand or more. They believe and are allowed to enjoy life for a time. Elsewhere the Quran says that the belief of the people of Yunus benefited them and that worldly torment was lifted from them for a time.

Editorial reflection

A question the story leaves open

The story makes room for a messenger’s distress without making it final. Honest acknowledgment becomes the beginning of return.
